WHAT ARE REMOTE OR TETHERED SHOOTS?

A remote shoot or tethered shoot is a way for a model and photographer to conduct a photoshoot from separate locations.

This alternative shooting method came about due to the COVID lockdown and has allowed artists from around the world to collaborate.

How does it work?

The model uses a tether cord to connect the camera to the computer.

Then using camera brand software with applications like TeamViewer, AnyDesk, or Zoom Video Conferencing for communication and screen sharing. The model then may grant the photographer remote access to the EOS Utility tethering software on the model’s monitor, allowing the photographer to control the settings of their camera, select the focus point, and fire the shutter.

Then together both parties orchestrate the shoot over a video call such as Facetime on a separate device like a mobile phone or tablet.

The JPEG and RAW images are then sent to you after the session through Wetransfer or Dropbox to download and edit in your style.

As the creator who arranges the shoot, directs the model, and makes creative choices, you own the copyright of the images from a remote shoot since you fire and release the shutter.

Additionally, a model release form may be emailed and returned signed if required.

Taking pictures in this method is certainly different, in no way will it ever replace the in-person interaction, but you still have a very active role and a huge amount of control and choice in the process. It is a challenging exploration of artistry, fusing the experience of models and photographers uniquely.

My conclusion is that every photographer and model should at least try a remote shoot once if possible.

For disabled photographers such as myself, this has opened a world of new opportunities! I never imagined I would be working with international models but now with the right software and a click of a button, it is possible. The key to great success is good communication and collaboration!
